HOLY JESUS, SPOILERS, but this basically sums up my feelings about the most recent GoT episode.
“They didn’t need to have her around, but they decided that having another named prostitute character was worthwhile. OK. Fine. Then they used her to replace other characters, like Alayaya and Chataya. Again, fine. Problematic that they replaced some of the few non-white named characters with Ros, but it’s an adaptation, and simplifications have to be made.”
Just…no. Not fine. Never fine.
Changing Asha’s name to Yara so people don’t get her confused with Osha (as dumb as I think that is) is a simplification.
Completely erasing two POC characters in favor of creating a white character who adds no overall value to the story is not a fucking simplification. They could have easily rolled Alayaya and Chataya into one character, kept her black and achieved the same goal.
So forgive me if I don’t weep over all this white feminist hand wringing about the treatment of Ros. It’s just another pretty white woman to me who got an opportunity that a pretty black woman never got the chance to have.
